Getting married in California? Planning a wedding, whether you’re a California resident or coming from out of the state or country, can be an ordeal.

Luckily, there are a lot of steps you can take to make the whole complicated and overblown business of getting married less traumatic and more enjoyable. The very best one involves concentrating on your strengths. At the heart of every nuptial celebration, there is at least one individual who browsed, bargained, compared, shopped, sampled, crafted, critiqued, and complimented to make it all happen. There is a good chance that you and your spouse-to-be are both talented and imaginative, though it’s equally likely that your particular aptitudes don’t extend in all directions. What that means is you can greatly improve your chances of looking back on your engagement with a smile instead of a grimace by focusing the majority of your energy on those details that excite and inspire you.

The emphasis on you is here because most wedding planning resources are overly focused on what’s traditional and expected instead of what couples actually want and what they’re actually good at.

Maybe you’re a serious budget diva. Or you may be one of those unique people who salivate when thinking about putting together fiddly favor kits on a deadline. Once you have a clear idea of what you like doing, think about what gets your intended’s motor purring. If your future spouse has a music collection that rivals that of the largest nearby library, they may very well get a kick out of choosing the ceremony music. The more you enjoy all of the little tasks you have to check off your list as you plan your California wedding, the happier you are going to be.

You can also take this line of thinking in the opposite direction when considering what duties you might like to delegate to friends or a certified wedding coordinator. As the days and weeks until your wedding fly by, you may be tempted to do all sorts of things it would never occur to you to do in any other circumstances. In the name of staying true to your budget, impressing people, or saving time, baking a wedding cake, sewing a gown, and putting together  floral arrangements can suddenly seem like no trouble at all. If you’re a whiz with a stand mixer, a crack hand with a needle, or generally dexterous, fantastic! But realize that this may not be the best time to discover you’re not the next Martha Stewart.

Whatever your preferences, latch onto them as you think about your wedding. Keep your limits in mind and don’t discount the joys of a small, intimate wedding. While you won’t be able to avoid every tedious wedding planning job that raises your hackles, there’s no reason to sacrifice your sanity in the name of perfection.
